Welcome Home to… is a digital lecture series presented by The Vessel, exploring some of Norway’s most iconic historical homes. The series is connected to the tenth issue of The Vessel, titled HOME, edited by Charlotte Jul and Ida Nissen. Hosted on Microsoft Teams, each episode of Welcome Home to… takes you inside a different artist’s home, guided by the historians, artists, and curators who care for them.

Welcome Home to... Nils-Aslak Valkeapää’s Lásságámmi

Join The Vessel and artist and architect Joar Nango for an online lecture on the home of Nils-Aslak Valkeapää (also known as Áillohaš), one of the most influential Sámi artists of all time. Lásságámmi, ‘the turf hut on the rocks’ was the name Valkeapää gave to his house in Ivgobahta/Skibotn, on the Norwegian side of Sápmi. The house was designed by Finnish architect Eino Jokinen, in close collaboration with Áillohaš himself. Today, Lásságámmi is managed by the foundation that preserves Valkeapää’s artistic legacy. Lásságámmi is currently a residence for artists and researchers working with Indigenous perspectives.

Welcome Home to… Hannah Ryggen

Join The Vessel and art historian Solveig Lønmo for an online lecture on the home of Hannah Ryggen (1894–1970), one of Norway’s most celebrated textile artists. Ryggen lived and worked at Rønnan, a modest farm house in Trøndelag, Norway, that she shared with artist husband Hans and daughter Mona. Though the house no longer stands, this lecture will offer a rare glimpse into how the artist couple, and in particular Hannah Ryggen, lived and worked.

Solveig Lønmo is a PhD candidate in art history at NTNU, with research focused on the material and processual aspects of Ryggen’s tapestries. She has worked curatorially with the Ryggen collection at Nordenfjeldske Kunstindustrimuseum since 2014.

Welcome Home to... Gustav Vigeland. Join The Vessel and Vigeland Museum and Park curator Marte Grette for an online lecture on the home of Gustav Vigeland, Norway’s most celebrated sculptor. Explore Vigeland’s apartment—a gesamtkunstwerk shaped by the Arts & Crafts movement—set on the outskirts of the Vigeland Sculpture Park in central Oslo.

Welcome Home to... Sigrid Undset’s Bjerkebæk. Join The Vessel and curator Kristin Brandtsegg Johansen for an online lecture on the home of Sigrid Undset, Norwegian writer and Nobel Prize for Literature laureate. Undset’s home Bjerkebæk is part of the foundation Lillehammer Museum and is located in Lillehammer in Norway. Undset lived and worked at Bjerkebæk from 1919 until her death in 1949, except for the war years when she resided in the USA.
